dc.description.abstract The study focuses on the difficulties learners of French as a foreign language face in reading aloud at Tempane Senior High School. The research also aimed at identifying the causes of such difficulties in order to propose appropriate and effective methods to help learners overcome them. We used a reading aloud test to examine the level of learners and to bring to light some of the difficulties they face in the process of reading. Then we distributed a questionnaire to two teachers of French to collect data in the abovementioned school. Analysis of data collected have shown that a great number of the learners have difficulties in reading aloud. The study also showed that even though the French language itself posed a lot of difficulties to the learners and the users of the language in general due to its complex nature, they were mostly influenced by their previous knowledge of their native languages and the English language. The method of teaching adopted by their teachers was also another factor that contributed to this challenge. In light of these findings, we proposed that the syllabic method is a more effective tool to help learners overcome these difficulties. It is more effective because it makes the learner active during the process of reading due to the fact that this method helps learner break the words down into smaller units thereby making their pronunciation less difficult. en_US
