Abstract:
This study is centered on the difficulties that learners of Kalpohin senior High School face in the use of morpheme leur. The objectives of our study are to identify the source of the difficulties to propose strategies and techniques of teaching. That can help the learners overcome their difficulties. Two questionnaires and test were used as instruments for data collection. Analyses of the data from the test and questionnaires revealed that learners studying French as a foreign language in Kalpohin Senior High are not able to correctly use the pronoun and the determinant leur with or without “s”. These difficulties are attributed to the insufficient knowledge learners of French and interference of the English language. The analysis also revealed a great pragmatic disparity between the French and learners’ first language. Analysis of the data equally indicated that some of the errors are as a result of over generalization of English grammatical rules leading to negative transfer. The study finally revealed that the causes of these problems are identified as lack of appropriate teaching and learning methods, materials and techniques adopted by the teachers of French in the teaching process. Recommendations are therefore given in the form of suggestions to improve the learning and teaching of French language in Ghana in general and in kalpohin Senior High School in particular.
