The study was conducted to investigate Biology practical activities in some selected
Mathematics and Science Colleges of Education (MSCoE). The sampled population for
the study consist of 125 students and 5 tutors from two selected Mathematics and Science
designated Colleges of Education in the Volta Region; St Francis College of Education
and Akatsi College of Education. The instruments used were questionnaires and
observation. Data collected was analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. The
research findings showed that both teachers and students from the selected Colleges of
Education considered practical lessons as one of the effective means of teaching and
learning science. It also came out that, both Colleges have science laboratories that were
not adequately equipped with equipment and materials. Again, the study revealed that,
students‟ participation in science practical lessons was mostly through the demonstration
instead of the hands-on activity. This had adverse effect on students‟ understanding and
experience in hands-on activities. Inadequate laboratory resources and less time
allocation for practical lessons were identified as the major challenges associated with
Biology practical lessons. To ensure efficiency in the teaching of the practical aspect of
science in the MSCoE, the study recommends that government and all stake holders in
education must supply laboratories in the studied Colleges of Education with the
necessary equipment, materials and chemicals to enable trainee teachers to develop the
necessary skills, attitudes and interest in science. |
