Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate the perception of teachers on performance
appraisal and the single spine salary scheme in Senior High Schools, a case study of
Prempeh College of the Kwadaso Sub-Metro in the Kumasi Metropolis. The
objectives of the study were to identify teachers’ view regarding Teacher Performance
Appraisal (TPA), investigate teachers’ view regarding the single spine salary scheme
(SSSS) as a performance reward system, establish the correlation between the existing
Teacher Performance Appraisal (TPA) and the single spine salary scheme (SSSS) as a
reward systems with regard to motivation and to identify other forms of motivation
among teachers in the Kumasi Metropolis. The quantitative research design was
employed for the study. The target population of the studywas125, comprising one
headmaster, four assistant headmasters, five heads of departments and 116 teachers.
The headmaster, three assistant headmasters and the five heads of departments were
selected through purposive sampling. The reliability test yielded Cronbach alpha of
0.78. Simple random sampling was used to select the 41 teachers making a total of 50
respondents for the study. The study found among others that on the average teachers
had positive perceptions of performance appraisals. The salary structure was
perceived by teachers to be equitable. It is recommended based on the findings that
head teachers and teachers should be trained on performance management and
appraisal practices and its importance towards the delivery of quality education.
