| dc.description.abstract | This study examines the use of Ghanaian language in Junior High School English classrooms. Specifically, it focuses on the use of L1 in different aspects of English language lessons. The tools used for this research work were observation and interview guide. Thirty English language lessons were observed and twenty teachers of English language were interviewed about their views on the use of L1 in the English language classroom.. The findings suggest that the use of L1 in the English language classroom does not hinder learning of the L2 but rather, it plays a facilitating role and can actually help learning. It was also disclosed that the amount of L1 used in the ESL classrooms varies on the educational level of the students and their English language proficiency. | en_US |
