<title>Language attitude and use of dangme by the people of Vilo and Manya Krobo</title>

<description>Language attitude and use of dangme by the people of Vilo and Manya Krobo
Asodji, V.K.
This study explores the language attitude and use of Dangme by the people of Yilo and&#13;
Manya Krobo. It examines the sociolinguistic factors that are influencing language&#13;
attitude in Yilo and Manya Krobo areas. The study aims at achieving the following&#13;
objectives: to assess the current language attitude of the Yilo and Manya Kroo&#13;
communities towards the use and study of Dangme, to identify the sociolinguistic&#13;
factors that are affecting the use and study of Dangme by the people of Yilo and Manya&#13;
Krobo, and to evaluate the implications of these attitudes on the preservation and&#13;
transmission of Dangme language within the Yilo and Manya Krobo communities. A&#13;
sample size of 80 respondents was used. The Critical Discourse Analyses and the&#13;
Variationist theories were the theoretical frameworks adopted for the study to explain&#13;
language attitude and the sociolinguistic factors influencing the use of Dangme in Yilo&#13;
and Manya Krobo. The mixed method, which merges both quantitative and qualitative&#13;
data at the same time of the research before integrating the information in the&#13;
interpretation of the results was employed. Data were primarily sourced purposively&#13;
from schools, churches, funerals, marriage ceremonies, and commerce using&#13;
questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and participant observation from a sample&#13;
size of 80 respondents. The study revealed that the negative attitude towards the&#13;
Dangme language has resulted in associating negative comments to it and these have&#13;
resulted in the use of two or more languages during social, economic, and cultural&#13;
activities. This was largely influenced by sociolinguistic factors such as social class,&#13;
prestige, political, historical, economic and government policy. The study also revealed&#13;
that misinterpretation is a common phenomenon when language interpreters were used&#13;
and this causes miscommunication.

<title>A sociolinguistic analysis of Ga appellations in Ga Mashie.</title>
<link>http://41.74.91.244:8080/handle/123456789/4988</link>
<description>A sociolinguistic analysis of Ga appellations in Ga Mashie.
Lamptey, I.
This study is a sociolinguistic analysis of Ga appellations used in Ga Mashie, Accra. It examines the concept of appellation among the Ga people and the linguistic structures which constitute Ga appellations. The study also identifies the sources and types of Ga appellations used in Ga Mashie. It also looks at the functions, significance of Ga appellations and occasions that necessitate them. The study employs the Ethnography of Communication propounded by Hymes (1974) for the analysis of the data gathered. Qualitative method is employed for an in-depth understanding of the study. Observation and interview were used to collect the data for this study. Findings of the study revealed that personal appellations, clan appellations, quarter appellations, state or community appellations, appellations for deities, royal appellations and animal appellations are the types of appellations used in Ga Mashie. Appellations were derived from physical structures or characters exhibited by the forebears, experiences such as war and famine. The study recommends that the media must initiate programs which will focus on educating the public on the meanings of appellations and its significance. Family heads must also endeavor to make the younger ones understand the relevance of the appellations attached to their names. Curriculum experts and teachers must plan the curriculum to capture meanings and significance of appellations. These recommendations when implemented will gear towards reviving knowledge on Ga appellations which are gradually waning among the Ga people.

<title>Semiotic study of Ga traditional symbols in some selected palaces</title>
<link>http://41.74.91.244:8080/handle/123456789/3413</link>
<description>Semiotic study of Ga traditional symbols in some selected palaces
Aryee, S.
This thesis presents the traditional symbols found at selected palaces of the Ga people &#13;
and brings out the historical, philosophical, educational and moral values inherent in &#13;
them. It seeks to encourage the understanding and usage of the Ga traditional symbols in &#13;
a more meaningful way by the Ga people themselves, Ghanaians as a whole and &#13;
foreigners as well, as well as contemporary artists, designers, craftsmen, teachers, and all &#13;
who appreciate the traditional symbols. The thesis highlights the seven symbols that&#13;
represent the seven coastal towns of the Ga state, namely Ga Mashie, Osu, La, Teshie, &#13;
Nugua, Tema and Kpone. The thesis finally discusses how the symbolic meanings, &#13;
philosophical, historical background, and the moral lessons of some selected symbols can &#13;
be applied to contemporary living. The research approach is qualitative. The Peirce &#13;
Semiotic theory was used for the analysis of the data. The thesis posits that, the Ga &#13;
traditional symbols form part of the Ga culture and their communication values are very&#13;
important. The thesis adds to knowledge in the disciplines of linguistics in general and &#13;
semiotics in particular.
