Assessing the role of School Management Committees (SMCs) in improving quality teaching and learning in Ashanti Mampong Municipal Basic Schools
Osei-Owusu, B; Sam, F.K
The study sought to assess the role of School Management Committees (SMCs) in improving quality teaching
and learning in Ashanti Mampong Municipal Township Basic Junior High Schools through the views of head
teachers, teachers and SMC Members. The design adopted for the study was a descriptive survey. A simple
random sampling method was used to select a sample size of thirty (30) respondents. Questionnaire was used to
collect (ed) data from the respondents, validated by the researchers and analyzed by the use of descriptive
statistics. The findings indicated that SMCs were ineffective in the monitoring and supervision of head
teachers', teacher's and pupils' attendance. Even though SMC’s are not doing enough to assist teachers to
improve teaching and learning, they are seen as very effective in solving school community relations since
SMCs are relatively on task on the issue of serving as a vehicle for promoting community participation in the
provision of quality education. Finally, it was recommended that much effort is needed to be done by SMCs in
the Ashanti Mampong Municipal to raise the standard of basic education. It is hoped that the findings will serve
as tools for change of practice of supervision of all stakeholders in the quality of teaching and learning in basic
schools.

Teachers’ perception on sustainability of distance education in Ghana: Evidence from Ashanti Region

Teachers’ perception on sustainability of distance education in Ghana: Evidence from Ashanti Region
Osei-Owusu, B; Awunyo-Vitor, D
The study examined the sustainability of distance education in the context of finance, management and
availability of support services in Ashanti region of Ghana. Data for the study were obtained from five groups of
respondents namely; centre coordinators, educational administrators, facilitators of distance education
programme, potential and current students pursuing distance education. Data was analysed using descriptive
statistics. The results revealed that current management and support services are adequate and sustainable. In the
case of finance management, it is believed that financial resources generated by the programme through students’
fees would sustain the programme. However, potential, and current students pursuing distance education viewed
the private cost involved as high. Hence for sustainability of the programme, it is important that school fees
charged are reviewed in order not to negatively influence students’ access to distance education.

The question of teacher background and quality early childhood education. A look at some selected schools in the Winneba Municipality, Ghana
Abdulai, A
The study examined the current educational and professional background of early childhood educators involved
in early childhood development in some selected schools in Winneba, Ghana; and how that affects quality of
work in the classroom. The study adopted the descriptive survey type, using a sample of 127 early childhood
educators randomly selected from early childhood centers and schools in the Winneba municipality. A
questionnaire was administered to respondents based on 16 items within four domains: Background of educators,
participation and organization of instruction, approach to growth and development, and organization of
curriculum. Key findings indicated that most educators did not have the professional training in early childhood
education. Based on the findings, a number of recommendations were made to address this important shortfall.
