Early sexual behaviours and implications the case of public senior high schools in Assin South District, Ghana
Morrison, L.N.
The focus of this study was to explore early sexual behaviours among Senior High
School students in Assin South District. The study employed the convergent or
concurrent mixed method design. The population of interest in this study comprised
Senior High School (SHS) students, teenage parents who dropped out of school at the
SHS level, parents of SHS teenagers and school counsellors in Assin South District.
Using purposive, proportionate stratified and systematic sampling techniques 318
respondents in the Assin South District were selected for the study. Questionnaire and
Interview guide were the main instrument employed in data collection. Expert reviews
and the pre-test of instrument were used to ensure validity of the instrument. The
reliability of the instrument, in terms of internal consistency, was ascertained using
Cronbach's Coefficient Alpha test. The individual scales had coefficients beyond 0.7,
suggesting appropriateness. Data collected were analysed descriptively and
thematically. The study revealed that the influx of exposure to pornographic pictures
and videos in the community arouses the sexual interest of students hence the edge to
practice (put into action) the scenes portrayed in the pornographic videos. The issue of
poverty, lack of access to education, healthcare, and resources, lack parental support,
communication, or supervision and peer influence within the socio-cultural milieu
cannot be relegated to the background. In addition, failure to control the excesses from
these factors above resulted in some consequences. These include teenage pregnancy,
truancy and school dropout as well as contraction of STIs. Factors such as personal
values, fear of getting pregnant, fear of contracting STIs as well as the desire for
academic achievement were some reasons shared by sexually not active students to help
them abstain from sexual activities. It was recommended that teachers and school
counsellors should create awareness on sexual behaviours and how to handle such
biological instincts when the need be. This will expose students to different ways
through which when such tendency and feelings occur, they can adequately manage it
to its barest minimum rather than engaging in sexual intercourse and other sexually
related activities.

Atanga, C.A.
This study explored challenges facing ICT empowerment of girls in Junior High
Schools in the Bongo District, focusing on the role school counsellors play in
supporting girls‘ engagement with ICT. The study employed a qualitative approach
and used face-to-face interviews to gather data. Guided by an interpretivism
paradigm, a phenomenological design was adopted to capture the essence of how girls
in Junior High Schools in the Bongo District experience ICT access and usage for
empowerment. The research population consisted of 116 participants, including 4
school counsellors, 108 form three female students, and 4 ICT teachers. From this
population, 28 participants were purposively selected based on their direct
involvement in ICT and girls‘ empowerment activities. However, following the
principle of data saturation, where no new information or themes emerged during
analysis, the final sample size was 18 participants. These included 4 school
counsellors, 10 female students, and 4 ICT teachers, which was sufficient to provide
comprehensive insights into the study‘s objectives. A semi-structured interview guide
facilitated data collection, while inductive thematic analysis was used to identify
recurring patterns and themes. Findings revealed critical challenges such as limited
access to ICT resources, inadequate infrastructure, and sociocultural barriers that limit
girls‘ participation in ICT activities. The study also highlighted the need for
continuous psychosocial and academic support to sustain girls‘ interest in ICT. Based
on the findings, it is recommended that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration
with local government and NGOs, take immediate steps to equip all Junior High
Schools in the Bongo District with essential ICT resources. Additionally, awareness
campaigns should be conducted to educate parents and communities on the
importance of ICT for girls' empowerment. School counsellors should also receive
additional training and resources to strengthen their role in promoting ICT access and
usage among female students.

Mensah, J.K.
The joy of couples is to have children after marriage. "Voluntary childlessness"
cannot be found in the dictionaries of people in Ghana. Against this backdrop, this
study explored the mental health-related impact of unintended childlessness among
married couples from a Christian cultural perspective. The purpose of the study was to
explore and understand the experiences of Ghanaian Christian couples in terms of
childlessness they did not anticipate, vis-à-vis how the Christian community has come
alongside them in navigating this phenomenon in their lives. The study's specific
goals included examining how couples in Ghanaian Christian society perceive
unintended childlessness, identifying management strategies for unintended
childlessness, examining the mental health effects of unintended childlessness among
Ghanaian Christian couples, and determining the impact of religious (faith-based)
interventions and church support on perceived psychological adjustment. The study
used a semi-structured interview guide to gather data and a qualitative method
approach using narrative inquiry as the design. The study used a thematic analysis by
identifying, analysing and interpreting themes. The data was collected and an initial
coding was done, a coding was categorize in a code book then it was grouped and
refined into themes The study used a sample size of thirteen (13) participants.
According to the findings, the majority of participants were able to deal with the
difficulty of being childless thanks to the support they receive from their churches,
their families, and their spouses' unwavering love. Therefore, it is advised that experts
in the field of counselling should oversee the church's counselling department. This
implies that, rather than making their members' situation worse, pastors and family
members ought to have empathy for them and act as their advocate

Ashiaman, one of the Municipal Assemblies in Greater Accra is being
beleaguered by the problem of street youth. This study explored the lived
experiences of street youth: paying particular attention to factors accounting
for the phenomenon, experiences, risk factors of street life and the coping
mechanism and resilience of street youth. The interpretive research approach
was adopted and data were collected from 25 selected street youth through
purposive sampling technique. Thematic analysis was conducted to explore
the lived experiences of streetism. The phenomenon of streetism is thriving
in Ashiaman due to social acceptance given to street youth. Many of the
youth are also forced to the streets due to poverty so as to provide for their
basic needs. Youth streetism has also gained grounds because these youth
come under peer-influence. Recreational adventure also compels youth to
the street to experience street life. The experiences of street youth in
Ashiaman are full of challenges on meeting their basic needs of life. The risk
factors of street living poses harm to street youth serving as a breeding
ground for violent behaviors. Street youth are making efforts to address their
challenges and risk factors. It is recommended that vocational training, reunion
initiatives, and advocacy activities can help address the problem of
street youth in Ashiaman.
